I just got back from a 5 day fishing trip in PEI and caught the most expensive trout I have ever caught.

My Dad and I have been making a trip to Souris PEI for about 7 years now to spend a few days trout fishing in the area. At first it was fun and we were catching plenty of nice trout but this year was more or less a bust. In the past we would spend about 3-4 days there and catch out limit of 10 nice sized trout (12+ inches) each day and have a lot of fun. This year the regulations have changed and we were only allowed to have one days limit in our possession which is now 8 and only one can be over 15 inches. The last time I went I was able to return with 30 trout as the daily limit was 10 and you could have 3 days worth.

The actual fishing was poor, only hooked 15 trout total and only 3 were 12 inches long and the rest were 8-11 inches. I only kept 12 of them over the 5 days and came home with 8 that I gave to my Dad once we got home. I spent $380 for the trip so the 12 trout I caught and kept cost me $31.66 each and I only ate 4 of them while there. So the 4 trout I ate cost me $95 each!

We are planning a couple days of fishing on the Miramichi next week and hopefully it will be better, cheaper and the trout will be much bigger.

Supper with anyone, anywhere?

As I sit and eat in silence I thought to myself “Wouldn’t it be cool to be sitting and eating with Neil DeGrasse-Tyson.” I have been watching and listening to him for a while and really like his intelligence and his awesome outlook on things and people. This got me thinking about who else I would like to sit and eat and have a conversation with? This is my top 5 people to do that with in no particular order and why I would like to sit and chat. Some of these people may be dead or never existed at all but it is my list.

#1. Neil DeGrasse-Tyson, for the reasons mentioned above. He is extremely smart but also caring and really wants to educate us to make us better citizens. I would like to eat in his favorite Lab.

#2 John Prine – One of my favorite singer/songwriters. His songs are so interesting and I have seen him in concert 3 times so a sit down with him would be kinda cool. I would like to eat in a greasy diner in Alabama somewhere.

#3 Socrates – This would be cool, I could fill him in on some of the things he was right on and some things he was wrong on….lol. At least I could give him something to think about like the Jersey Shore or Dr Phil. I would like to take him to Mc Donalds.

#4 Abraham Lincoln – I just like his hat. He was a man born before his time with great vision. In an old Pub near Boston.

#5 – The Prophet Mohammed (if he existed) and try to get him to remove all the violent passages from the Koran and take the “bad parts” of Islam away from the extremist or radical Muslims. I could do the same for the Bible but too many different people made up that stuff. Jesus Christ had nothing to do with the book but I would like to meet him as well to straighten out that stuff too. We could eat at a fancy place near an oasis after a long camel ride.

 

I could probably go on for days with this list but 5 is enough for today. I mean How about Winston Churchill, William Shatner, Napoleon, Rasputin, Martin Luther King, Charlie Chaplin, Hitler, Budda, Galilieo, Nero, Madame Curry, Buckwheat,  the list goes on.

I was out yesterday and saw so many of these I was thinking about creating that website and let anyone post away with examples of Idiot, Douchebags and Losers. I was thinking about how to make it for hours but then realized that I could end up in trouble with it. If I or someone else posted a pic of one of the aforementioned individuals and they found out about it, they might get mad, like Idiots Douchebags and Losers tend to do. Is it really necessary to point out these people who exist just to make me mad to everyone, I think yes but some others may have a different point of view. I am not perfect, sometimes I make a bonehead move, we all do but I do not do it as good as a true Idiot, Douchebag or Loser would. Less fanfare I would think.

An example of an Idiot is some one wandering around a store oblivious to the other people around him or her. They stand in the middle of the aisle in the way with no idea they are holding up modern society with their cart and stunned look on their face as they try to decide what type of pudding to get. They also stand on the corner pushing the walk signal button 50 times in a row thinking it will change faster, duh!

An example of a Douchbag is a guy who parks in the fire lane for 20 minutes at Costco waiting for his lazy wife to come out with their cheap smokes and giant muffins. It is also the yourn D-bag with the crappy Honda Civic with shocker stickers, bright blue headlights, loud distorted music, stupid giant beaked ball cap on at an angle and a cheap GPS mounted in the window even though he never leaves town. When they get older they buy Acuras, Audis or BMWs.

Losers probably bother me the least but I get the most enjoyment from. They are generally harmless and don’t realize they are losers. These are guys that try to be cool but are about 15 years too late with their style and probably dropped out of school before 15. They walk around in a slack jawed wonder with out a clue what is going on around them. They usually are dirty and smell a bit (or a lot). They also tend to find the perfect match with a slovenly large female companion wearing stretchy pants and a sweater.

Back to my website idea, I think it would be fun but ultimately it would just be a local www.peopleofwalmart.com

I realize that everyone can’t be “normal” other wise how would I know what I am?

I want to write more often, but….

Every night while lying in bed I can think of dozens of things I want to write about on here but usually by morning I have forgotten or realize that it wouldn’t really matter if I wrote it down on here or not, who is going to read it or care?

That is the problem with blogs in general, anyone can make one and no one really reads them. Now if you are an expert in a certain subject and there are people out there who would genuinely care about your opinion then maybe a blog is good for you but what about us regular people. Those who go through life just doing their own thing at their own pace with their own opinions. I guess I could put everything down on here that I want to say and not worry about what others think or say, really it doesn’t matter on the whole.

One thing I could write endlessly about is bad drivers, they annoy me to no end. People who don’t understand basic road rules like, signs, lines and signal lights. Why don’t people signal their intentions to others by using the legally mandated device attached to the steering column that will in turn show me their intentions via, a flashing light located on the front and rear of their car, to vacate the lane they are currently in. Be it to the adjacent lane or to exit it completely onto another street or parking area. If you are already in a lane that is by it design branching off to another then you do not have to indicate that with a signal light as you are not vacating that lane but following it to join another street, where when reaching the merge area you will then use the signal light to indicate that you are joining the other street now.

And now about merge lanes, you don’t have to slow down or speed up to let someone in as they are supposed to find a spot to merge into your lane and they are to adjust their speed to fit in. I hate it when I see the space I want to merge into and someone slows down to let me in and therefore removes the space I was aiming for. Now I have to react to that and slow down more or speed up quickly to not cause a problem that some moron just created for me. If you want to move over to the left lane to let cars merge in that is great but sometimes you can’t so hold your course and let me merge in on my own. I also hate it when cars stop to merge when they have their own lane to go into on the other street, there are signs indicating it but they still stop and wait, idiots.

I also hate it when someone races to get out in front of me and goes slow or turns off right away. If I had to use my brake to avoid hitting you, YOU DIDN’T HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO GO!!

Three great days of Geocaching

This has been a good week for me, Geocaching wise. It started with a 15.5 km hike down the old abandoned railway line that used to go from Chipman to Norton. The line was built back around 1870 and was dismantled and removed from 1960 to 1990. I was out with a couple of Geocaching friends, we had two vehicles and leapfrogged them from crossroad to crossroad for about 6 hours of walking finding about 43 caches along the way. Coyote tracks, Drinking hole the animals try to keep open, Mark up where the train bridge used to cross, Criss crossing grouse tracks, Looking down the trail, Me in the light snow, A pile of junk along the trail, the old homestead, and finding an old (2004) geocache near the Old Dick Mine (copper mine in Annidale).

We followed the coyote tracks for about 2 kms and saw at least 20 grouse and over 10 deer in two groups, over all it was a good day.

 

 

On day two I went out to Anagance with Jeff, a coworker and found another 27 caches along a couple of dirt roads that run along side the highway. These ones were close to the road and we could drive up close to all of them. While there we met another geocacher who was behind us and slowly caught up to us at the end. This was the first time I met that geocacher from Saint John although I have seen his name around for a while now. This was a quick day and back home just after lunch.

The third day, I joined up with Mark and Jeff again to do caches in Shediac, Scoudouc and near Memramcook. In Shediac we drove along a dirt road to find 20 caches with Looney Loons cartoon themes, it was a nice mix of types and only took about 1hour to do. After that we tackled the challenge of the day, a 5km round trip cache along an ATV trail with about 300 meters through a frozen bog full of alders. It wasn’t too bad and we did manage to get Mark’s Jeep in a short way to cut down the walk and have some off road fun. On the way out we had a bear cross the road about 100 meters in front of us. We stopped for a second but then realized it was probably still heading away from us quickly and was probably a bit groggy from being up in the winter for a short time. I tried to get a good pic of it’s tracks but they were not real good. I wasn’t worried, bears are not a problem around here and there was three of us to one of him and he wasn’t all that big….lol. After finding this cache we headed to a trail near Memramcook that had about 15 caches on it. It was along a well used ATV trail but we only met two ATVs and we happened to be off the trail when they went by. Nothing really happened here but the geocaches were all really well done, one was a 20 gallon garbage can hanging in a tree full of smaller geocaches for people to take to hide. This day started at 9am and was over by 3:30 after finding 35 geocaches. I have to go to work tomorrow evening so I will be sleeping in and getting plenty of rest after this busy last three days.

Jeff, Mark and I are already making plans for the next time we are off, in 7 days from now.

Happy F#%&ing 2012

Well this year is starting off with a bang. My fantastic NFL team, the New York JETS did not play to their incredible potential this year and I dropped my supper on the floor, I don’t know which is worse. The Jets showed flashes of brilliance and incredible game mismanagement. Personally I think the play calling stunk, it put the quarterback in bad positions at times and the quarterback put himself in some bad plays many times as well. I think they need to trade Holmes, get another running back and tight end. A new offensive coordinator would be nice as well.

I am now wondering what is yet to come this year, Julie’s car needs to be inspected this month and even though it is working fine but I can see something pop up. I am taking on some bigger roles in the area for geocaching so that could go awry but I will now stop being pessimistic and switch to some good stuff.

I will get back to you on that, once I figure out some of it. Still too upset about the JETS.

I can’t sleep.

As I was laying in bed last night I wondered if I was the only one who laid there thinking about a million things and not being able to fall asleep. I assume other people do that sometimes, get in bed and can’t stop thinking about things, anything. Some nights I am up for over two hours just thinking about stuff and it is about a little of everything. Usually it is about what I would do if I had millions of dollars. Sometimes I think about what I would do with the lotto winnings we would win at work which would between $200,000 or $5,000,000 depending on the lotto. Some times I think about getting one billion and think about what I would do to help as many people as possible.

Sometimes I think of other things, like being a professional basketball player or world class musician. Other times I think of things I want to say here but I usually forget about it when I wake up. I remember one night I had a really good idea, or at least I thought so, about writing a book. I would love to write a book someday but I know without any training it would be crap…lol. I dream a lot as well and sometimes I dream about the stuff I stay up thinking about which makes it worse when I wake up and it isn’t true.

I would write down the things I think about at night but it would just keep me up longer and I have a hard enough time falling asleep as it is. Krista is asleep within minutes of going to bed which bugs me because I can’t, never could. My mind just gets too busy.

Am I the only person who does this, dream about stuff before I even fall asleep?

What happened here in NB with Hunting?

I started hunting in 1984 when I turned 14 and got my first hunting license for small game. I went out as often as my Dad would take me and we always came home with something, rabbits or grouse. Dad used to go out and see deer almost everyday and he always got a deer each year. I hunted for deer for about 2 years from 18-20 years old and then my life got busy and I moved away from it and NB for quite a while because of work and starting a family. I never lost the love of it or the desire to go out but it wasn’t in the cards for a bunch of reasons. When I moved back to NB in 2004 I started it up again. The first 3 years were ok I saw deer multiple times each year and always saw deer along side the highway at night on the way home. I got a 4 point buck my second year back but I was seeing many does each year and because of my lack of luck I have never been chosen to get a doe license. I have applied for moose each year and have never been drawn for that either.

The last two years have been terrible, the areas we usually hunt, which over the last 30 years have had a fair amount of deer have dried up. No sign of deer at all, no tracks, not eating the apples (we started putting some out along side of the road the last two years to see if there were any around at all) and no hunters are there anymore. We used to have 20 trucks drive past us on any given day, now we go all day and see one or two, that in it self is telling us something. One thing that changed in the Coles Island area is the influx of hunters from the Acadian Peninsula who have been coming down with trailers and staying in the area for the whole season. They were coming down 10-15 guys each week and leaving the trailers there for the season. They were also caught doing some illegal things as well. I came across two of them bringing out 4 frozen deer at 8 in the morning on an ATV with a small trailer. I think they played a part in cleaning out the area, it has been declining even since they closed the northern zones forcing hundreds of hunters south.

The winters have been rough on the deer for the past two years as well and that doesn’t help either. I hear stories of some guys getting multiple deer out of the same stand which really pisses me off. We are not stand hunters that bait the deer in for weeks before the season, we prefer to go out and find fields, hydro lines, choppings or back roads to “hunt”. We walk through the woods and down trails trying to find deer, not luring them out into traps, it isn’t as successful but it feels more like hunting to me. I will walk down a small road slowly and quietly hoping to find a deer, or sneak along the edge of a clearing looking for a good vantage point to watch for game to come out.

Today was the last day for deer hunting and Dad and I had plans to go out but after this week of no deer or even any tracks on the ground we decided to save the time and money and stay home. First time in my life that I gave up and didn’t go out and hunt on the last day. We are considering giving it up for a while to see what becomes of deer hunting in NB, I think something drastic needs to be done by the Department of Natural resources in order to get the deer population back up so that it is both enjoyable and profitable. They must be hurting from the decline of hunters because they keep putting the price up and now next year you will have to pay to be in the doe draw. My opinion is to close the season every other year or do a draw like for moose. I have not done much trout fishing the past two years might be time to get back into fishing again.

Dobson Trail

A few months ago I heard a rumour that Jim Dewolfe was stepping down from his responsibility for the first two kilometers of the Dobson Trail. I believe that he has been doing it for at least 20 years and I assumed that there would be people coming out of the woodwork trying to take over the most popular and most used section of the trail. I made an inquiry about a month ago about that section and who was doing it and was surprised to find out that no one had stepped up, so I did. I made an offer to have the Riverview Scouting group take on the task with myself being the main contact and worker.  After a discussion with Rodney Steeves, the president and Alonzo Leger, the vice we were in. I went out with Rodney to walk our section and we discussed some of the things we can do and some of the upcoming projects.

 

Within a couple of days I got a phone call from Jim Dewolfe and we were on our way out to start work on a new fir pit/campsite just past the 2.5 km mark. So far I have about 5 hours of work in and have the new fire pit in and did some clearing of brush around the site.

The first task was to dig a hole 3 x3 x3 feet to bury the logs that the cooking grate it attached to and then put in the fire barrel. It isn’t going to come up without a shovel now.

I also started clearing out the area to make room for some log benches we will have to make and to make room for one large or many small tents. Eventually we will get some tables built for people to use to prepare to cook some meals as well. I am hoping to have it ready for a winter camp and then have it finished completely by next summer. I will keep posting updates as the work progresses.

A hunting I will go

It is fall, my favorite time of the year to be in the woods. No bugs and the leaves are starting to change colors and fall. It is a great time to geocache as the weather is cooler and the caches can be a little easier to find with the leaves down, but the main reason I love the fall is it is hunting season.

I started hunting at 14 years old, actually I started going out with my father and grandfather before that but I could not carry my own gun until I took my training course at 14. For the next 4 years I used a .22 and hunted for rabbits while dad was looking for deer. At 18 I got my deer license and hunted for a couple more years before taking a long break. I got married and had kids which took up too much time so hunting went on the back shelf. Moving to Newfoundland didn’t help either as I had no one to go with and Dad had all the gear back in New Brunswick. So when I moved back to NB I took it up again. I have never had my name drawn for Moose or for a doe license so I have only killed one buck, the only one to walk out in front of me while I had a gun ready. I have seen many deer while driving or it was a doe that I couldn’t shoot. I am getting pretty frustrated the last few years as I would really like to get one and I also would like to get a new, more powerful rifle. For some reason my current rifle, a winchester 32 special, will not stay sighted. I have to go every year and go through a box of shells to get it back on target.

It is a fine gun for short distance and walking down back roads for shots under 100 meters but any longer and it really loses its power and accuracy. Maybe I need a better scope but I don’t want to invest in one if I and going to replace the whole thing soon. I sighted it back in today and I am ready to go, I will be using two rifles this year as my brother will not be going out much so depending on where I am hunting will determine if I will use my 32 or his 30.06 which is much more powerful.

Our hunting area was cut by Irving about 20 years ago and was starting to grow back in too thick to hunt but they have been back in the area harvesting again the past few years so we have some new open area to watch but the deer count is way down there now and we may need to go some where else next year. I am currently looking around for a new area.

If I get lucky and manage to find a buck I will let you all know.
